Poetry Journey #20

Holiday Break - Reflecting on Progress

What I'm Learning About My Voice

Taking a week to reflect on the 14 poems we've analysed so far. Here's what I'm noticing about my patterns, progress, and persistent challenges.

My Recurring Strengths:

  • Getting better at specific imagery ("frost of Siberia," "map of desire drawn by time")

  • Learning to balance sensuality with artistry

  • Developing stronger metaphors (the oak poems)

  • More intentional line breaks and pacing

Persistent Challenges:

  • Still falling into clichés when emotion gets big

  • Uncertainty about when poems are complete vs. underdeveloped

  • Inconsistent voice across different poems

  • Struggling with the line between accessible and simplistic

Biggest Surprise: How much my "confidence" poems ("A Marriage Poem," "Love So True") feel less authentic than my questioning, exploring poems.

Voice Patterns I'm Noticing:

  1. Declarative Voice ("A Marriage Poem") - formal, certain, but often clichéd

  2. Playful Voice ("Sitting in a Scottish Tree") - light, engaging, but risks trivialising

  3. Sensual Voice ("Beneath the Hush," "Soft and Steady") - lyrical but sometimes purple

  4. Contemporary Voice ("A Possible Wife") - specific, original, feels most authentic

Questions for Readers:

  • Which poems feel most like "my voice" so far?

  • What patterns do you see that I might be missing?

  • Should I be worried about the voice inconsistency or is it exploration?

Back next week with regular analysis. Happy holidays, fellow poetry travellers.
